These search tips relate to the discography of Norwegian jazz recordings only,
not biographies, jazz history, photographs etc.
Search
General Information
You can search this database by entering terms in one or
more of the fields on the search form. If you enter terms in more than
one field, you ask that every matching record should contain all the terms
you have entered. The more terms you enter, the more precise your search is.
Title/Keyword
This field lets you search for the whole title or significant
words in a title. The system does not support searching for parts of a
word, i.e. you can search for "dreams", but not "drea".
If your search contains the definite article "the" or the indefinite
article "a", these will be ignored by the system. The three
search terms "a dream deferred", "the dream deferred"
or "dream deferred" will all give the same result.
There are two different types of search:
1. Title Keyword: Searches for one or more of the words in the title.
2. Keywords: Searches for one or more of the words in the title or notes
field.
If you search for more than one word, the words should be entered with
space between them. You can decide how you want the different words to
relate to each other. By choosing
All the Words (Boolean "and") you request that each
matching record should contain all of the search terms.
Any of the Words (Boolean "or") you request that one
or more of your search terms should exist in every matching record.
Exact Phrase you request that the exact phrase should exist in every
matching record.
Keyword searches that contain special Norwegian letters æ,
ø or å, and also ö, ä are unfortunately not supported by the system.
The same is the case with accents (for example à, é, ã) and other punctuation (full stop, colon etc.).
There are also other 'stopwords' in keyword searches; and, on, if, in etc. In these cases,
please use 'Advanced Search', the field 'Title Keyword' and choose 'Title'. Search
for the whole title or the beginning of the title.
Searh on
The system lets you search according to whether you want
information about albums, tracks or both. There are three alternatives. Search on:
1. Album and Track Titles.
2. Album Titles.
3. Track Titles
Names
You can search for all kinds of names, both group names and personal names;
musicians, singers, composers, directors etc. You can also search for
the beginning of a name.
Personal names: Enter the name in the inverted form, for example
Garbarek, Jan. You can also enter the surname only ("Garbarek" searches
for all persons with Garbarek as their surname, i.e. Anja, Vigdis
and Jan Garbarek will be represented in the list of retrieved records).
In addition, you can search for the first part of a name ("Gar"
will find all records with Garbarek, but also for example Ronny Gardiner and
Rudy Garred).
Groups: Enter the whole or the first part of the group's name.
If the name starts with the definite article "the", the article
should not be entered in your search term (write "Alf Kjellman
Project", not "The Alf Kjellman Project").
More names: In your search, you can ask for more than one name
to exist on every matching record. The different names should be separated
by a semicolon (;). If you want to find all recordings where Karin Krog,
Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen play together, you enter your search
term like this: "krog, karin;andersen, arild;christensen, jon".
Date
The date the recording was made. Where the recording sessions extend over two
or more years (for example compilations), the recording dates are presented
on the information about the album. It is important to notice that any search
that include year as search term will fail to retrieve these particular
records. This problem only concerns album titles.
Year Recorded: This field lets you find all
recordings made in one particular year, for example 1999.
Year Recorded, Range: This field will give you all recordings made
within a range of years. If you enter for example "1965-1967", you
will get everything recorded in 1965, 1966 and 1967.

Advanced Search
General Information
You can search by entering search terms in one or more of the fields
in the search form. If you enter terms in more than one field, you ask
that every matching record should contain all terms you have entered.
The more terms you enter, the more precise your search is.
Title/Keyword
This field lets you search for the whole title or significant
words from a title.
There are three different types of search:
1. Title: You can search for the exact title, or you can search
for the beginning of the title (automatic truncation).
If you for example search for "all", you will get "All About
You", "All Muddled up", "Allah's Holiday, Foxtrot",
"Alle tre" etc. The search term "Dreams" will give
you "Dreams of Pyramids" and "Dream Stepper", but
not "Street of Dreams" or "A Weaver of Dreams".
If you search for titles that begin with the English articles "the" or "a",
you should ommit the article in your search. Searches for the title "A Day in May"
should be entered "Day in May" on the search form. In the same way you should enter
"Lady is a Tramp" to get "The Lay is a Tramp". Using "the" as your search term will
give you a list of retrieved records where "the" does not appearas the article "the". Your list
will contain for example "The Theme", "Them", "Them Shoes Hit Me in the Face"
etc.
2. Title Keyword: Searches for one ore more words in the title.
3. Keywords: Searches for one or more words I the title or notes
field.
For alternatives 2 and 3, if you search for more than one keyword, the words are
entered with space between them. You can decide how you want the different words to
relate to each other. By choosing
All the Words (Boolean "and") you request that each
matching record should contain all search terms.
Any of the Words (Boolean "or") you request that one
or more of your search terms should exist in every matching record.
Exact Phrase you request that the exact phrase should exist in
every matching record.
For these two alternatives the system does not support searching
for parts of a word, i.e. you can search for "dreams", but not
"drea". If your search contains the definite article "the" or the indefinite
article "a", these will be ignored by the system (the three
search terms "a dream deferred", "the dream deferred"
or "dream deferred" will all give the same result).
Keyword searches that contain special Norwegian letters æ,
ø or å and also ö, ä are unfortunately not supported by the system. The same is
the case with accents (for example à, é, ã etc.) and other punctuation (full stop, colon etc.).
There are also other 'stopwords' in keyword searches; and, on, if, in etc. For these searches, please
use alternative 1, 'Titles'. Search for the whole title og the beginning of the title.
Searh on
The system lets you search according to whether you want
information about albums, tracks or both. The alternatives are searhes on:
1. All Titles.
2. Album Titles.
3. Track Titles
Record Label
Here you can search for the record company label only, or you can combine
it with the exact catalogue number. Click on the arrow behind the field,
and you will get an alphabetical list of all record labels entered in
the base. Alternatively, you can enter the first letter of the record
label in the field, and then click on the arrow. Click on the label, and
it will automatically be entered into the field in the search form.
Catalogue Number: Fill in the catalogue number in the field
behind the record label. Examples of catalogue numbers are HCRCD 126, CYL2-1449.
Remember that this field has to be combined with the record label.
Date
The date the recording was made. Where the recording sessions extend over two
or more years (for example compilations), the recording dates are presented
on the information about the album. It is important to notice that
any search that include year as search term will fail to retrieve these particular
records. This problem concerns album titles only.
You can choose between three different ways of searching for year or date:
1. Year Recorded: This field lets you find
all recordings made in one particular year, for example 1999.
2. Year Recorded, Range: This field will give you all recordings made
within a range of years. If you enter for example "1965-1967", you
will get everything recorded in 1965, 1966 and 1967.
3. Date Recorded: By choosing this, you can search for the date of
the recording as given on the cover of the album. The records in the database
will always contain a year that you can search for. For many of the records there
will be a start date and an end date, sometimes a month and sometimes the
season. Month and season are always given in English, for example
"summer 1978", "spring 1977" "June 1982".
Months can be abbreviated or written fully, e.g. "Aug. 1987",
"16. Dec. 1958", or "25. August 1990".
Names
Groups/Surname, First Name
You can search for all kinds of names, both group names and personal
names: musicians, singers, composers, directors etc. You can also search
for the beginning of a name, and you can ask for a musician and all
records where he or she plays a specific instrument.
Personal names: Enter the name in the inverted form, for example
Garbarek, Jan. You can also enter the surname only ("Garbarek"
will search for all persons with Garbarek as their surname, i.e.
Anja, Vigdis and Jan Garbarek will be represented in the list of results).
In addition, you can search for the first part of a name ("Gar"
will find all records with Garbarek, but also for example Ronny Gardiner
and Rudy Garred).
Groups: Enter the whole or the first part of the group's name.
If the name starts with the definite article "the", the
article should not be entered in your search term (write "Alf
Kjellman Project", not "The Alf Kjellman Project").
Instrument/Role: If you want a list where a musician plays
a specific instrument, you can use this field to enter the instrument
you want. Click on the arrow behind the field, and you get an alphabetical
list of instruments or other roles. Alternatively, you can enter the
first letter of the instrument/role, and then click on the arrow. Click
on the instrument/role, and it will automatically be entered in the
search field. Searches in this field has to be combined with a name.
Alternatively, the name can be replaced by an asterix (*).
Main Artist: Click here if you only want the recordings
where the person or band is the main performer.
List of Names: If you are unsure of the name of the artist
you want to search for, you can click on the icon for this list, search
for the name (or just surname or first part of the name), and the
system will give you a list of matching names to choose from. The list
you search in is the authority list, containing all names entered into
the database. Click on the name you want, and it will automatically
be entered into the main search form.
Next Name
You may enter up to three different names as criteria in your search.
The names can relate to the search in different ways:
And (Boolean "and"): The first and the second (alternatively
also the third) name should exist in every record in the list of results.
Or (Boolean "or"): One or more of the names should
exist in the matching records. This search will give you a longer
list of results than using "and".
And not (Boolean "not"): The matching records will
not include any records where this name exists. You can for example search
for all records where Jon Christensen plays, but not where he plays
together with Arild Andersen.
Sound Clips
Put a checkmark in this box and you will search among the records where you
can listen to the music only. By using this as your only search criterion, you
will get a list of all tracks available for listening on this site. At
the moment, there are around 30 sound files added.
Sort by
The results may be presented in two different ways:
1. Title: The list is sorted alphabetically by title.
2. Year Recorded: The list is sorted chronologically.
